This conference is designed to bring together researchers, designers, developers and policy makers to exchange and share their experiences and efforts around designing and implementing digital healthcare technologies for the global south.
Delivering healthcare services to sensitive/marginalized populations in the global south faces many challenges. Deficiencies in how the healthcare system operates and barriers patients face to get access to proper treatments pose a threat to the quality of care for these populations. In a situation where the use of digital technologies could potentially alleviate some of these issues, implementations in global south contexts have historically shown that foreign solutions are ineffective due to local constraints. When it comes to the use of digital systems and tools, the global south population still faces access, literacy, cultural and economic barriers preventing digital technologies to have a wider acceptance and market penetration.
Now with the world facing COVID-19, this unprecedented situation poses major challenges for both the health-care system and general population, particularly for those marginalized communities who are confronted with day-to-day barriers. DigiHealthSouth 2020 wants to offer a common ground for academia and industry to share their novel works addressing global south’s healthcare scenarios, with a big opportunity for COVID-related innovations to showcase experiences and thoughts.
When it comes to the adaptation of technical systems for healthcare, there is a need for a deep understanding of the user, the stakeholders and local resources so the risk of failure is lessened. Therefore, we are interested in exchanging knowledge in the design of localized solutions where the user, his context and the local market are part of the design process. Efforts around eHealth, Telemedicine, Human Computer Interaction for Development (HCI4D), Internet of Good Things (IoGT) and even DIY technology culture are welcome to discuss how these solutions have tackled healthcare delivery, community engagement, patients’ recovery and treatments, chronic diseases, prevention and tailored cost-effective solutions.
